Type Locality and Naming

PONDICHERRY OUTCROP: Named after Valudavur village, Pondicherry. Type locality = Vanur and Ottai villages (Rajagopal, 1965)


Lithology and Thickness

Sandstone. The lower beds consist of pale yellow, fine to very coarse-grained sandstone with persistent mica as a trace component and sporadic rounded quartzose pebbles. The upper interval comprises pale sandstone, uncemented with bioturbated, calcareous concretions and pebble conglomerate horizons. In addition, there is concretionary shale and coquina. Thickness of the formation is 180 m (Sundaram et al., 2001).

Fossils

Ammonites; Foraminifer Globotruncana tricarinata Zone, and Globotruncana gansseri and Abathomphalus mayaroensis zones


Age 

Late Campanian Globotruncana tricarinata Zone in the lower part of the formation and of Maastrichtian Globotruncana gansseri and Abathomphalus mayaroensis subzones in the upper part (Govindan, 1972). Ammonites from the upper part of the formation are of late Maastrichtian age (Kennedy and Henderson, 1992a)
